A fresh coat of paint for the bunker
The Nether-World - Labour's grim night: Tony Blair is said to be having a cabinet reshuffle today in the hope that this will deflect attention from Labour's disastrous results and give the impression that Blair is still in control. It won't!
We beg to differ.
We fear it will work. On the public... for a while... and at further cost to Labour's dwindling fortunes.
Today we will be assured that all is well; that the 26% result was really no different to the 2004 local elections, and that Labour went on to win the 2005 General Election (with a whopping 22%).
Oh, but don't go making the mistake of thinking that result is part of a long-term problem. The lovely Tessa was assuring us well before any real results were in that this was only because the last 9-12 days were so very awful.
Not that things are as awful as all that... (we will also be reminded that254 278 319 is not 350 or 400).
Lessons learned, robust government, determination to pursue reforms etc. etc. etc.
And here's one of those reforms, neatly buried in yesterday's election frenzy.
(UPDATE - And another.)
We await the details of the reshuffle with interest. If Blair puts the Safety Elephant out to pasture and puts Hoon in charge of the Home Office, then serious questions will need to be asked about his priorities. And his sanity.

Didn't vote Labour.
Labour lost.
Result.
About time Blair got on his bike then!
I'm always disappointed that the seemingly unthinking masses just switch between Labour and Conservative. They ought to be poles apart. OK, I know New Labour is in fact vote red get blue, but does that mean that the mass of real labour voters no longer exists? I think not. I think the real labour values and desires are still there in people's hearts, but they would do better to switch to lib-dem in protest to idicate what they really want, e.g. no illegal war in Iraq, preservation of civil liberties, etc. By irrationally switching to conservative the vote-market led, rather than principles led, labour party will just become more and more like the Tories, who themselves are now mimicking to some extent the New Labour approach. It's all just merging into an unprincipled centre ground miasma, so something different has to be done. Vote Respect? Vote Lib-Dem? Start an armed uprising? Thinking, heartfelt politics has gone forever otherwise. Media led and media fed, mindless worker-consumers, the living dead.
Oh no! Please no, not Hazel Blears. She's just walked grinning into number 10. Any advice on claiming political asylum in Cuba would be most appreciated; anything to get me out of this political asylum!
Oh no! Please no, not Hazel Blears.
Worse - it's John Reid for Minister of the Interior
