During the 2005 UK General Election and the 2006 local elections, we asked you to register a highly visible and damaging protest vote against Tony Blair, his style of government, his right-wing leanings, and his lies about the 'war' on terror and Iraq.

Shayler to stand against Blair

BBC - Ex-MI5 agent David Shayler is to stand against Tony Blair, in his Sedgefield constituency, at the general election.

David Shayler will make an excellent independant candidate. In addition to his understanding of the way the intelligence services operate and his public profile, David is almost a local lad, hailing from Middlesbrough. We'd ask everyine to get behind is candidature and give him all the support we can.

Shayler should stand down - Reg Keys from Military Families Against War is a far more credible candidate than an 'ex'MI5 officer (how ex is a matter of concern) who has never come clean about ongoing security service operations against campaigners. And he didn't bother to consult anyone before announcing his candidature

I'm afraid I don't entirely agree with Backing Blair on David Shayler. He, like me, has every right to stand against Blair, but what sort of politician will he make for Sedgefield? A person who has such a intensely personal loathing of the Blair Government (well, haven't we all, I hear you say?) can hardly be expected to be that an objective MP in Parliament. He joined MI5 of his own volition, signed the Official Secrets Act and then allegedly, when things did not work out, split on the Government (about things like the existence of old files on Mandleson, Harman and Straw's etc).So what? I agree with loads of things he is saying about the war, but I really wonder if he wil get that many votes. Sadly, although Reg Keys may appear to be the better candidate, once again, I'm not sure how the poor man will manage in the longer run. With the death of his son, he must be in a terrible state of turmoil and grief. But will such an experience make him the best choice for the Anti-war lobby? He deserves everyone's sympathy, but I think Sedgefield's next politician needs to be committed for a host of reasons, not just because of a horrible twist of fate. I don't blame him for standing though, indeed, he should stand, for the sake of his dead son. I just wonder if either of these two are the best choices to tackle Blair. As the leader of 'The Blair Must Go Party', and someone who is also standing in Sedgefield, I would say that wouldn't I? But at least I came to the decision after alot of thought and careful reflection over two years ago and not because of some deeply bitter experience or tradegy. Also, as I started my campaign last September, I'm hardly jumping on any bandwagons. Check out my website on www.blairmustgo.org and let me know what you think! It's difficult to make my case here, but basically, I'm trying to get every anti Blair person to vote for Blair Must Go, and to appeal right across the political spectrum. There's a Sedgefield Against War meeting next Tuesday at the Golden Lion at 7.00pm in Sedgefield, so why don't you come along and give me the third degree? I'll probably be shit and you can have a laugh at my expense.

We agree Shayler should stand down. He needs to move on from this episode in his life and recognise that we are not interested in him. He sold out for money not ethics he is morally bankrupt. Shayler get a proper job and leave politics to genuine people like Reg Keys.

It's so good to hear people dismissing the person without knowing a thing about them...

David speaks out against the system and gets reviled for it, isn't that a 'good' thing?, that people from the eastablishment realise that things are really going wrong? That speak out?

Actually since the latest addition to the opposition in Sedgefield, David will probably step down from what I heard from a mutual friend.

People do move on from past jobs, like many in '5' & '6' that are emerging from the woodwork, they realise that they have been lied to, indoctrinated, manipulated, not in the name of national security or for a higher ideal but simply to assist the businessmen and politicians to wage their profit war against the people.

So good on them, those that come out...
